These hoop earrings are a great fun duo of charms to be worn as a pair; a beautifully crafted ‘Mano Cornuto’ hand charm and an enamel Cornicello chilli pepper with stardust beads on elongated plated hoop earrings.
Mano Cornuto means ‘horned hand’ in Italian; the gesture is commonly depicted on charms and talismans against the ‘Evil eye’. It is unclear whether the gesture originated as an image of horns or as a ‘poking out the eyes’ gesture against the ‘Evil eye’, but is probably related to ancient lunar goddess charms depicting animal horns which were used for similar protective purposes.
The Cornicello is an Italian good luck amulet used for protection against the Evil eye. It is a twisted horn-shaped charm often made of red coral. According to some Calabrese traditions, the horn was once modeled after a chilli pepper, due to its abundance in the region.
